This is a real big problem now that rubber mats are coming out of communist chinese factories. They tend to use toxic and inferior rubber saturated with chemicals. While you can spray them down, wash them and leave them out in the sun, it doesn't necessarily eliminate the smell, which will continue for months even years.

Purchase rubber mats made in a western democratic nation and you will be fine.

throw them out of the car hang them over the fence in the sun a few days turning them over until done. And you're not one of those who has carpet and carpet mats covered by sisal mats that need protection so the rubber mats on top, ARE YOU? Dangerious as the mats tend to get behind the brake and gas pedals.
