What was the cause of the fire: vandalism? faulty electrics (eg pier illuminations)?
It seems so ironic that so many meet their end in flames when they are surrounded by water.

The west pier at Brighton - it was suspected arson. Sometimes they show it in the background when they are reporting on the Labour Party Conference this week. The wreck is still standing and although it is all burnt it looks quite beautiful in a strange kind of way.

South Parade peir in Southsea burnt down twice, more recently in 1976 during the filming of Ken Russell's movie, Tommy.
Rumour has it Russell caused the fire deliberately to add effect in the film. See the movie with Roger Daltrey if you dont believe me!

The "Steel Pier" in Atlantic City, NJ
Around 1973 it was almost totally burned.
It was mostly over the ocean and partly on the beach.

Could be harder for firemen to reach with only one direction to approach from, possible congestion at resorts too.
Also ironic that it was not cost effective to rebuild with today's advanced methods and equipment?

very,very high rent property though.

Could it be that it's more cost effective to raze with fire that to obtain permits and dismantle ???
