If it is too good to be true, then it must be a lie. The only free money is from a game or realtiy TV show.
You got a check and deposited it. What problems resulted from that act?

Deposit it at the ATM and if it goes through take the cash and keep it in a safety deposit box at that bank, sort of like escrow. When people start complaining you can say it is still in the banks system for safe keeping. This has happend before and you should ask a good lawyer what to do.

I hope you closed your original account. If not you should right away. The next time you get something you have questions about, go to www.rifoffreport.com and check it out. Type the title of your item in the searchbar and see what information you can find. once you go to this website, save it in your favorites or bookmark it so you can go there easily the next time you need to.
This may be something you should turn over to the FBI for further investigation. There are a lot of scams like that appearing and if they are going to be stopped, someone needs to make the first step.

I would be more worried that they are doing that to get an account number for identity theft. Banks usually always write a personal account number on every check deposited. There is no free lunch in this world. Monitor your credit.

Why not just take it to the bank it was drawn on and cash it?
If you take it to your bank and cash it and it turns out to be a bad check, they can debit your bank account for the amount of the check. This can cause all sorts of problems.
If you take it to the bank it was drawn on, you walk away with cash. If it was a bad check, it's not your problem.

Bring it to your local police in the original envelope and file a police report. The reason these scams continue is because people just tear up the check and throw it out. If more people turned these over to the police and filed reports maybe they could find the people running these scams and get them shut down

If the check they sent you was good (and it put cash into your account), how did this turn into a nightmare?
How about sharing more details and how this worked through for you?
