We are in a universe.

A parallel universe is an entirely different universe, which we cannot observe (as of yet) by any means.

A multiverse is the collection of all the parallel universes in existence.

Take note:

universe: uni-one, single
multiverse: multi -several, many

Many alternate universes make up a multiverse. A parallel universe is a separate universe beside, or "parallel" to our own, or another universe. It's easy to think about if you think: multiple universes = multiverse. Or a diagram (M= multiverse; P= single universes):

P P P P P P P P P\
P P P P P P P P P (infinity) ------> M
P P P P P P P P P/
