The painting made the earrings an insult to the man's wife, proof of his infidelity with the girl in the portrait, so; his wife demanded that the girl be let go and the earrings were given to the girl to get her to shut her mouth, and because; they where a reminder of the artist's indiscretion. The person giving her the earrings was sad that this would label the girl a whore and make her unsuitable for other work in the area as people talk.
