Eugene, OR, sounds made to order.
There are lots of smaller towns within 15 miles of Eugene, too.

I'm with you. I've done quite a bit of research on it, and actually visited some of these places. North Carolina has to be at the top of the list. Particularly Chapel Hill-Carrboro. Chapel Hill is a small university town, home of the University oF North Carolina. Carrboro is a smaller town that literally adjoins Chapel Hill...there's hardly a way to know that you left one to go into the other. Carrboro is the quieter of the two. Both are safe and middle income.
Carrboro is more about doing things yourself. There is quite a bit of greenspace in both towns. Both are environmentally conscious and very friendly to people from all walks of life, with a an edge to Carrboro.
Visit, you'll love it.

Fort Collins, Colorado, where I live. Old fashioned life style, the best biking/hiking paths in Colorado (better than Boulder - more of them, going more places). Family oriented events, like the "First Night" that takes on New Year's Eve (to encourage families to be together and discourage drinking parties).

Also the best Senior Center in the country, with many activities, great facilities (pool, whirlpool, exercise room, TV room, walking path, pool table, crafts room), at very low annual cost.

It's a great place, without the traffic of big cities, climate is good most of the year (we do get a few days of snow, but not many, usually the skies are blue and clear).

It is also listed in the top 3 places to retire, because the cost of housing here is also very low - it has not reached the "bubble" in house prices that most of the country is experiencing.

There is a website and a book that rates retirement places. From what you say, I think you'd like North Carolina.

New Bern, NC. I will be going back there some day. Beach, water, quiet, with lots of places close by (Wilmington, Raleigh)...
