Oi Gent! I'm not quite vintage yet. I've only seen him in re-runs and programmes about the show etc. Don't sound too convincing, do I...

Agree: John Noakes or Valerie Singleton. That was in the days when the programme came from Lime Grove studios. For several years Biddy Baxter forbade the showing of the "Elephant" scene (the keeper was a genuine London Zoo employee not Benny Hill, by the way) but unknown to her, the tape of the incident was kept under the floor of the (then) videotape suite at Television Centre and was played frequently to new staff. The elephant nearly did not appear, as it refused to leave the lift which took it up to Studio D and had to be coaxed out by its keeper.

John Noakes was brilliant! I was a kid when he was on, with Peter Purves and Lesley Judd (who was a bit suspect I felt at the time), and no-one has ever taken old Noaksey's place - he was great. All the mad things he used to get up to - the perfect presenter for a generation of outdoors kids. Don't suppose he'd go down so well today though since most kids only seem interested in electronic games, msn and expensive gadgets. Does anyone still watch Blue Peter?

Mark Curry was best Teach. You're showing yer age love, Noakes was way before my time lolx

I only know who Noakes is because of the clip with the elephant. I'm pretty convinced the guy from the Zoo was Benny Hill.

I think Peter Duncan. But I'm now watching it again, second time round with my 5yr old son, and Matt who just left was pretty good too.

I'm same as you Teach! Noaksey was the main man!

Simon Groome had Goldie who was a lovely dog. I was gutted when it died (I was probably in my twenties by then)!
