1: Yes, it took me two years just to get a rudimentary grasp of it. However, there are similarities with German, Russian and a number of other languages.
2: We won the war. Also, because Americans, Brits, Canadians, Kiwis and Aussies speak it as their native language. The British colonial system is also a major influence given that there are over a billion Indians, and many of them speak English. Are you sure English is number 2? Presumably it comes in second to Mandarin. English is the dominant language for finance and air traffic control.
3: Necessary. Especially for an American. Learning any of the Romance Languages, (Italian, French, Spanish and maybe Portuguese) will make it easier to learn the others, or so I'm told.
4: I would prefer to learn French first before Spanish.
5: I am not sure which second language I would like to learn: Given enough time, French, Hindi, German, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and maybe Mandarin. Then Farsi, Arabic, Greek and Latin and Sanskrit. Maybe even Urdu and Ukrainian.
Of those choices, I would choose German first, because so many Europeans are multilingual, and I could use German in Germany and Switzerland and Belgium.
This is a lot of thought for two points.

1. No, not at all... then again it was my first language.
2. Maybe because English has a lot of double meanings and double words (sometimes even 3 or 4 for one or the other)
3. Not as hard but still have to watch what 'kind' of Spanish you use and where (i.e., some words in Mexico have diff. meanings in Puerto Rico - even in Tagalog (Filipino) where the basis of Tagalog is partly Spanish)
4. I haven't spoken French since I was a kid so I can't answer this one.
5. I would like to re-learn Tagalog. I was very fluent being that my mother is from there and growing up and moving w/the military, I didn't have any kids my age to talk with (my mom took English diction classes while I was young and chose to spoke English w/me instead)

The English language is one of the hardest languages to learn. It's because we have some many words that sound alike but have different meanings. (Ex. picture, pitcher) 2. Because we are such a large country. 3.I'm from Texas and Spanish is spoken quite a bit here. 4. My husband speaks French and it's a very beautiful sounding language. 5. I wish I knew more Spanish. I really need Spanish to communicate with one of my best friends.

1. Yes, I believe it is especially for people over the age of 7 or 8.
2. I think English is the most spoken 2nd language because it seems that the Englishman has historically been a world traveller, settler, conqueror and statesman.
3. I think Spanish is a beautiful and for me, hard to learn language.
4. I love French and speak a little French.
5. I would like to be fluent in Spanish because it is very commonly spoken, especially in my hometown where I paranoidly feel that it is used to speak badly of others but not only for that reason. I'd like to be able to help others and being bilingual would also expand my business.

Speaking English is Easy, Understanding English is harder, it is a pliable language thus acceptable to a majority of the Planet, when people come from a varietry of cultures, even within the same Language group such as people from South America, English is the meeting place, the language of the marketplace, common ground for the sounds of a bustling planet.
Spanish sounds sexy even when harsh & guttural while French seems mannered & polished, I would like to learn Chinese so I can speak to a billion plus people in their own language - - -whichever dialect is in vogue at the moment. Peace.
