Cause you are her prince and she is your princess..In the early yrs with Kings and Queens all the men and women bowed before them to show them respect and appreciation..So I think it just picked up from their..You want your lovely lady to know you think she is your princess so you bow before her and take her hand and in stead of kissing it you propose your loving care and devotion to her..For life..Now isn't that sweet..I didn't get that but I'm sure my husband meant well...

you live on your own little planet don't you? I mean, bashing homosexuality and now the sweetest thing my husband has ever done (omg he went all out on his proposal) just because it is a time they will remember for the rest of thier lives. also, my husband, is from scotland. they do it there too. i've seen pictures of his parents when his dad proposed. same thing. down on one knee. so next time you ask a question, make sure that you get more info or pick something else less stupid to bash.

It is a form of submission as the Alpha male bows to the Alpha female to show he is not trying to be dominate.Kind of like when a dog comes to you wagging its tail with its head down.It is acknowledging dominant power. The only humiliation is when one of the couples true dominant nature prevails.

It's a romantic gesture. It shows you are very serious about being married to her, and that you truly want to be with her. Besides, its tradition.

My fiance didn't get down on one knee, but the engagement stuck.

It's just one knee... on both knees would be the "begging" position. One knee is what gentlemen do.
