I am a single mom of a 4 month old, I work full time in the US Air Force, and I have a cat. I also watch a friend's cat for them. My little girl loves to watch the cats play in front of her. Having a busy schedule is no problem - actually I have many more quiet moments than I ever expected I would - I have a very 'easy' baby girl! (I'm so lucky!) The cats play lightly, not like some crazy cats that climb walls! But she seems mesmerized by them, and it's good for her development, for example: she sees them swat at a hanging ball and then sees the ball swing back and forth. We have a happy home, play lots, and the cats understand that they are not to hurt, sit on, or mess with my baby. They also know I'll get very upset if they go in her crib - whether she's in there or not. They *seem* to understand that I care about them, but that my baby comes first. Who can tell what, if anything, is going on inside a cat's head?

A pet can indeed be a soul companion when you are solitary but I have to scramble with its hygiene issues and that drives me mad!
Its lots of work behind a pet and busy working /studying people find it hard to devote that extra time toa pets upkeeping, you cant ignore it cuz it will start reeking with unhygienic stuff, so basically I am skeptical of getting one cuz I am afraid of the soo many diseases that pets carry, means a lot of work with the vet and injections etc,
however, If time permits me, I would not mind a cat!

But I read recently that even cats carry certain forms of salmonella ......

I have had a pet all of my adult life and could not imagine my life without one. We could not have one when I was younger because we lived in a apartment that did not allow pets of any kind. I think that everyone should have a pet of some kind even if it is only fish.

I work full time and raise a 5 year old by myself. They are alot of work and very expensive. It wouldn't be fair to the pet, if I were it's owner.

Maybe when my son gets big enough to care for one, I'll get him a little puppy, but right not, it's not practical.
