A female baby is born with her ovaries fully formed ( the part of the body that stores the eggs that will eventually combine with a sperm from a man to make a baby)

A woman has two ovaries attached by tubes to the uterus - the space where the baby will grow in a woman. - when there is no baby in it, it is about the size of an orange and located in the lower part of a womans belly.

During puberty the ovaries start to release eggs - one from each ovary every two months - this means overall an egg is released every month on average.

It travels down the tube towards the uterus over about a week. During this time the lining of the uterus gets very thick to make a good environment for a potential new baby to grow.

HOwever if a sperm and the egg don't combine and embed themselves in the lining of the womb that has become thick then the lining starts to fall away and come out through the vagina.

This is the period. Although it looks very bloody there are only a few tea spoons of blood, most of the discharge is the lining of the womb.

It is progesterone and oestrogen hormones in the body that regulate this process - they let the body know when to release the egg, start thickening the womb and start the period.

They normally last until the age of around 50 when women go through the menapause.

Meaning of the word 'PERIOD' differes from man to man or should we say from man to man to woman. Period is a part of hiostory . Like Mogul period or British period etc. It may also be a specific time lapse like first period in the School. For a linguist its that all important dot at the end of a sentance. For a comuter programmer a dot may indicate a break in logic. For a girl or a woman it means three to four uncomfortable days in a month and for a host of FMCG Companies it means a huge business opportunity selling sanitry napkins.

a period is the time of month when a female menstruates. Her body will bleed from the vagina. It is sometimes painful, & she may be moody, too. It's a sign that she is beginning puberty.
