I have a 3yr. in my class who will repeat what you say but only says the second word. For example I will ask him to say "bed time" he will say " time." He does have a speech problem with sounds. I am thinking this is a problem with in his brain. I would love to know if there is a name for this and any help I can provide him. His mother is concerned and stumped. So am I. The speech therapist is coming in a couple of weeks. I would rather not wait. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

He sounds a little behind developmentally. You know when you give a 1or2 year old a choice and they always pick the last thing you say its the stage of development that they are at The first thing I would do is rule out a hearing loss, does he have any spontaneous speech if so work on repeating back what he says to you . if he says "me want drink" you say ("I would like a) drink please" back to him but not necessarily making him repeat right now just work on giving him information. lots of songs poems silly rhymes try not to single him out in front of the other children this may make him stop talking altogether.

I have experienced children with autism/developmental delay doing this. This child is still young. The speech path eval is a good first step. The parent may want to seek out a preschool screeninng from her distict to see if future services may be needed.

You may want to signal to him before you start to speak. THis would at east let you know if perhaps he was not focusing in until the second word.

It sounds as though there is a partial hearing loss or ear blockage; extra wax or even fluid on the ears. A trip to a school nurse would at least eliminate this one possibility.
