The DC universe is the modern-day outgrowth of the "Golden Age" of comics back in the 1940s. Heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel (SHAZAM!), Green Lantern, the Flash- more emphasis on the heroic ideals of honesty, justice, self-sacrifice. Stories place in fictional places- Metropolis, Gotham City, Central City, etc. Lots of heroes are either alien (Superman, Martian Manhunter) or magical (Wonder Woman, Dr Fate, Phantom Stranger) in origin, and their powers are often somewhat unrealistic.

Marvel got started in the 60's, the "Silver Age" and decided to make the comics closer to real-life. Lots of storylines revolved around real-world issues- the people behind the masks had personal problems and were no different than normal people. Losing jobs & failing in relationships because they have to keep secret identities, etc.

The superpowers were more "sci-fi on steroids" than DC- for example, Spider Man gained his abilitites from a radioactive spider, but his powers are more plausible- stronger than a human but can't lift whole buildings, can stick to walls but can't fly. The X-Men are mutants and deal with the same prejudices that minorities do, just on a larger scale. The Hulk was a military experiment gone wrong, the Fantastic Four an accident in space. Iron Man was basically a Hugh Hefner guy- rich playboy who happened to be a brilliant engineer. He originally created armored chestplate to save himself from a a weak heart (shrapnel wound from Viet Nam), but he kept adding to it, until it became a full-fledged suit that he used to fight crime.

The Marvel Universe is set in real-world locations such as New York and Los Angeles. Plots a bit less idealistic and more shades of gray. Now after the 80's DC became more marvel-like in their storytelling (as plenty of Marvel artists and writers changed companies) but the basic cast of characters for each company remains unchanged.

They are two differant companies. All of the stories published by DC are interconnected, meaning that Superman and The Flash (for example) live in the same continuety and meet each other from time to time even though they typically have their own separate stories. Similarly, all of the Marvel characters exist in the same world, so occasionaly Spider-Man will have a run in with Iron Man. The world of DC comics is refered to by people in the comics industry as the "DC Universe" and the world of Marvel Comics is refered to as the "Marvel Universe". Differances between the two are that the DCU has a lot of fictional locations, like Gotham City and Metropolis. In the Marvel U, everything takes place in real cities, like New York City. Other than that, there's nothing majorly differant besides the fact in the DCU, characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman go around fighting crime and in Marvel U characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, and the X-men go around fighting crime.

Well, in recent years, DC has been trying to eliminate parallel worlds and alternate universes, while Marvel has been collecting and acquiring them. Personally, I think DC had a big garage sale and Marvel just happened to drive by with a pickup truck!
