Rap is music. Just like Rock wasn't rock-n-roll until people noticed it was here to stay. However, there is still the same re-occurring theme as in any music genre, It's there either it's meant to shock us, see how far we will let them take it, or it is just a new beat to tell people the some things in life are sad, evil, great, or just maybe the song is just a bunch of meaningless dribble with a good beat to dance or clean the house to. Take a look at Eminem, some of his stuff is just vulgar crap with no true meaning, but others have caught the attention of a broad range of people due to the lyrics. I like rap as much as any other type as long as it has something to say, just like John Lennon, who was ahead of his time with music style. But people listened to the realism of his words and the meaning of his songs, especially the one that hit us hard "let it be". So don't be to hasty to reject a new sound or type of music until you get the meaning. Ever since people could make sound there was music, and ever since there has been music sometimes in the beginning it is rejected. Oh yeah, remember Elvis....

"Rap" is NOT music; it's just a bunch of noise combined with a lot of filth. It's disgusting, and only serves to "dumb-down" those who listen to it. There is no redeeming social value (although some rap artists will claim it represents the 'true' image of life in the ghetto). All it really does is perpetuate life in the ghetto; why can't these "musicians" compose music that would give ghetto youth something to look up to, to strive for, to project a more positive image for themselves? The entertainment industry has tremendous influence over young people's minds, so instead of poisoning those fertile minds with filthy language, sex, violence, rape, and immorality, these rap 'stars' would be better to write music that lifts the spirits and morale of youth, music that can serve as something inspirational instead of so downgrading.
"Rap" is NOT music; it's garbage that infests young people's minds,s teals their money, then robs them of their innocence. It's this kind of "entertainment" that is part of the toxicity saturating America today. -RKO-

It's okay. Nowadays it's about violence and that's what those parental advisory labels are on it. It was good for old school rap like RUN DMC and LL COOL J, but not like people like ENINEM, etc. Rappers got to be careful of their language in the lyrics and what the song is all about.

it has many similarities to old Anglo-Saxon poetry. except the Saxons don't seem to have been so misogynistic and the poems were usually written about other people and events rather than being so vainly self-centered.
