I think July5 UK and Helga are on the right track. However, they have not quite reached the station. The "Ultimate" sports car list should be broken down as follows:
Price Unlimited Exotic: McClaren F1
Without Spending a Million, Porsche 911 Carrera S4 (turbo)
Under $100,000, Dodge Viper
and finally the baby of all which is also the winner in two categories, Under $50,000 and best bang for the buck, Ford Mustang, (87-95)
I drive a 2002 Mustang lx sedan, interceptor version, and have yet to be out run.

The Fastest America car built was a 1972 Chevelle SS. 12 second Quarter Mile straight off the showroom floor. Not a Sportcar but faster than the Corvette.

Certainly not the Corvette!!! Ha! They handle like barges. Clearly they can only get votes from people who've never driven a real sports car.
The best sports car ever made...?
The Porsche 911 (in all it's variants).

I'm kind of partial to the Caterham Seven CSR. Weighs about a third of what your typical exotic does, packs a bit over 200 hp.
