I am white and Irish. I have many more friends that are of other races than I do white friends. I am so lucky to live in a multicultural environment. If someone has called me a racial slur I probably ignored them...I actually lived on an island where there were 150 white residents and 3000 black/west indian residence. There was much less racism there but it still exists. America for some reason is more racist than many places on the globe....I am not sure why. I think racism is the product of fear which rears its ugly head as hate...

Anybody who has ever lived in an area where s/he was in a minority has been subject to racial slurs and discrimination.
I will not tell you where I was, but I worked for years with a minority group. I went there expecting to do some good for humanity, and not expecting any reward, but spent the last few years there only because the job was secure and the pay was good. I did not expect anybody to love me, but I was totally unprepared for the hate which I would encounter. I do not harbor any hate, in fact, I hold many of the people dear, but I will never go back.

Because I have a wide variety of friends, I've never taken racial slurs seriously. I just take into account that person's personality and move on. I do, however, get "slurs" for the way I dress, the music I listen to, and my sub-culture. It does still hurt, but I also believe in Karma.

Yes I have many times. My wife more than I by far. She is a teacher at an all black inner-city school. Parents other teacher have called her all kinds of names. The thing that breaks her heart is when they have black history in February each year...she tells her kindergartners about Martin Luther King...and every year one child will say..white people killed him, all white people are bad etc...then my wife will try to explain to these 5 year old that not all white people are bad and she tells them that she is white...the children get very upset when she tells them this..they run over to her and tell her that she is NOT white...that she is just light skinned..they try to console her that she is not white...they have been taught racism at 4-5 years old...an entire generation taught to hate...so yes my family knows very well about name calling and racism.

One morning I was trying to pick up something in the outdoor garden section at Wal Mart and obviously got in the wrong lane. A black man was blocking the whole area with his vehicle and cars were lined up (at least 6) behind me. So I got out of my car and asked if he would please pull his vehicle over to a parking slot and he called me a white honkey for trying to tell him what to do. I won't write what else he said. Needless to say I was so appalled that I didn't say a word to him and simply got back into my car & waited until he decided to leave. I won't make that same mistake twice.

I am not offended by racial or ethnic slurs. I am what I am: white, slovak, male with glasses. Aka whitey, hunky, four eyes.
When I was a kid and someone called me names, my response was: "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me."

Do you mean literally? As in "hey you, racial slur, come over here". That seems like an unusual thing to say.

More often, people say things to me like "you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you son?"
