Afraid of what waits if they leave the relationship ..could be financially as well, the stability of having someone @ home ..
As well some believe that you can still work it out and find ways to make it better in the relationship. Going to counseling.
Some feel its best for the children .. not wanting them to be in a family that is separated.
There are multiple reasons, religious as well - each have their own reasonings behind it.

It cannot be generalised at all! Depends on individual decisions. I wud say there are a lot of factors. Sum people do not get comfortable with the idea of marriage. And sum do not feel the need to! After all marriage is just a form of social security. Some people are true enough that they can commit without any legal proofs. Gud for them!

Because marriage, or living together, eventually becomes complacent (or predictable/boring) and couples tend to take eachother for granted.
Ask yourself this question: Would you rather have the comfort of your own space and the excitement of a lover? Or would you rather be suffocated with a spouse, day in and day out ... not to mention losing yourself in the process?

Why buy the cow when you get the milk for free? Once a man says "I do" to a woman she changes. Of course woman will say the same thing too about men. Couples who live together have figured this out and it works for them

Things do change once you are married. You begin to get used to the idea that you are tied together and you are not "free" anymore.
When you live with a person who you love, your feelings are much intense as you realize that although you are not legally obligated to your partner, you want to share your life with him/her and you want to indulge for your love with one another

Because, as simple as this may sound, they are already living a married life, minus the piece of paper that binds them as husband and wife. It is their choice and as long as they're happy with this, there's nothing wrong with it.

There are lots of reasons. Some that come to mind are that they are comfortable in their situation. Maybe they're afraid of committment or losing their independance.
