I am a vet tech at a large hospital. Originally we were to be on call
one weekend day every 8 weeks for the 12am to 12am shift. This week I am on call to cover three different shifts and was also called in to cover for a surgery. So that means I have been on call for 40 hours this week and only scheduled for 32 hours. I am supposed to be a full time employee. I live an hour away from work and have a child. This is starting to interfere with my life!

I would suggest that you speak with someone of authority in the personnel office (AKA Human Resources Office). Explain your circumstances, including the fact that you have a child to consider and the fact that you were hired as a full-time employee. They should be able to work out some kind of a more reasonable schedule for you. Be sure to ask them how many hours is full-time? In my experience at working in various places, each place has there own idea about how many hours full-time is.
It sounds to me like your workplace is having a hard time keeping help. They must be making it hard on everyone there. If it's at all possible, seek employment elsewhere. Maybe there is a small clinic nearby. Check your Yellow Pages. You are getting lost in the crowd. A smaller place would get to know you on a personal level and you would be more appreciated.

It's actually a view point: you say"interfering with life", one might say "enriching life", with added experience, more # of hours put in for the 'log' and 'cv', and, perhaps some more money too! may be, some one will join the staff soon to share the work: very soon!
