Start your windows media player, from the menus, chose "Tools"
at the bottom there you see "Options" click on it and there will be another window opened right in front of you, from the top of it, chose "File Types",you'll see a list of types like : mp3 , avi , mpg ,etc
some are checked and some not, check whatever you want to play with windows media player. if you want to play everything, click on the "select all" button down there, and then click on ok.
now you should have no problem ;)

Go to "Start" > "Set Program Access and Defaults" > "Custom" then tick Windows Media Player as default.
Why you would to exclusively use WMP though is a mystery as it really eats into your computer resources and I can just see Bill Gates grinning as he sees what a nice music collection you have.

In WMP, Tools>Options>File Types>Select All>OK

That will make WMP default for EVERYTHING, (video, dvd, etc.) not just music! If you want ONLY music, just check the appropiate boxes in the list.

Some players like Real Player, Winamp, etc., will try to make themselves default when you run them, so, watch out.

in windows explorer right click on a music file and click properties.

Where it says 'opens with' if it doesn't say media player then click change and choose media player and then OK
