I would suggest the moth balls also, AS LONG AS they won't seep into the pond, because they melt. Our farmer's co-op sells snake glue traps, like mouse/rat ones, just bigger for snakes-and if you don't want to kill it, you can pour vegetable oil on it and eventually it'll work itself free from it.
As far as it being poisonous or not, copperheads, cottonmouths, rat snakes etc are brown variations also. You can tell by the eyes as previously stated, and I've also heard the shape of the head, triangular is venomous-but not sure how reliable that is.
Not sure of the setup & size of your pond, but you could try putting a wire mesh across it(one with very small openings), or try buying one of those owl statues.

I don't know anything about snakes, except that I am afraid of them. I just want to say how sorry I am for you that your beautiful goldfish were all eaten by the snake.

Actually the only way to be certain if the smake is venomous is to look at their eyes....if the pupils are eliptical like a cats, it is poisonous, if the pupils are round, it is non venomous.
Get a big box of moth balls and spread them around the fish pond...this should take care of the problem.

I don't think that the color of the snake has anything to do with it being poisonous, or not.

Call your local animal society or even a vet and ask for help, the colour has no bearing on whether it's poisonous.
