I would like to open up a savings account in a bank that is not located in my state. Residing in KY, I would like to open an account in New York. Anyone know IF this is possible without my having to go to New York to actually open up this account? Any ideas as to the best bank in New York?

Many banks have branches in multiple states, even countries. Look for a bank like HSBC. You can open an account up in a KY branch and do your banking pretty much anywhere in the world.

First, I'd like to ask you, Why would you have the need or desire to establish an account outside your state of residence? I ask this because with the new federal banking regulations this type of transaction raises a "red flag" for the procedures a bank must follow with regard to the Bank Secrecy Act. It's actually known as non-routine or suspicious transaction and Risk Assessing comes into play. Some banks depending on their by-laws and policies/procedures will allow a non-resident to establish an account while other banks will deny the transaction.

only way to do that, would be like the first person suggested, but then your bank account wont be based in new york, but in kentucky.
i live in tennessee, but have an account in indiana, but only because i moved here from there, and there is a branch of that bank nearby. i left it like that because it is easier than closing that account, and opening up another one, and going thru all of my bills and changing the info on everything.

Some banks will let you apply online or through a customer service agent via telephone but they require you to fax them a copy of your license etc. If you choose a bank that is not in a lot of states like Bank of America, Wachovia and the like you will have to pay atm fees.
