From time to time we can hear a president apologize to his/her country's crime usually in connection with World War II. Is there any rule how far can we go back in time? Can Spain apologize to oppresing Belgium centuries ago? Can Russia aplogize to oppressing Chechnya now?

I think there should be no time limit for an apology. Even for history. When someone dies we tell their family members, I'm sorry for your loss. Saying sorry is a sign of compassion for something bad that happened.

Although these things happened long ago and the people that would remember it, directly, are gone.... means nothing.

A government always remembers its triumphs in history so we can remember the good times. We even make holidays. Maybe it is about time governments start remembering the bad things that were done too.

Any group of people that were oppressed passes down the hurt and hate from one generation to the next, so it truly is never forgotten.

An apology would lead to forgiveness and isn't that what this world needs.

Nope, no rules. Rome could apologize for killing all those people in the Colosseum if they wanted to.

It's quite interesting to me how the people claiming things happened too long ago to worry about most likely wouldn't have any problem buying a house with a deed that dated back a century or two. In other words, when it benefits them to go that far back, they're all for it.

Would it be of any value? "Whoops, sorry about that Belgium." And how could a country make a sincere apology about something that happened so long ago? Personally i feel an apology is nothing with out sincerity.

A generation, why apologize for people who are dead.
Except France they should constantly be reminded of all the trouble they have caused the world and try to make amends.

They should apologize as soon as they see sense....But mostly, like everything else in this life, it is when it is of some advantage!

And yes, Russia should bite the bullet and apologize to Chechnya!

gwb is too small to offer any type of apology, in any case it would not come from the heart. For a country to say sorry means nothing

I think it is ridiculous for a country to apologise for things that happened so long ago, nobody is alive who had anything to do with it. As Russia hasn't stopped oppressing Chechyna, it's pretty hard to apologise for it!

I think the Russian are waiting for the US to apologize for all their crimes in Iraq, Lebanon, and Afganistan. Well, also those Western countries that are fighting in Afganistan should apologize for all their crimes.
