It's all to do with concentration, we dont listen to music whilst studying, or else it just wont stay in our heads. Hence why when talking to someone, if they talk over you, you forget what you were about to say.

To concentrate...personally i turn it up so i cant hear my husband hootin and hollaring b/c i cant find the place and telling me where to turn when he has no clue either...
