Well, to start with its an idiom and a proverb, as for meaning,
More helpers make a task easier, as in "We need a few more volunteers to move the furniture--many hands make light work, you know". This proverb was first recorded in English in the early 1300s in a knightly romance known as Sir Bevis of Hampton. It appeared in practically all proverb collections from 1546 on.

It advocates team working. The more people (many hands) there are involved in a job, the less effort each one has to put (light work).

Don't hesitate to ask for help, deleguate and be sociable. I t does make life easier.

It takes one man a day to dig a grave.
How long would it take three men?
Get the idea?
But then you have "too many cooks spoil the broth" which is the opposite meaning.
These old sayings give old uns excuses for every situation which arises basically.

I believe it to mean that the more people helping, the lighter the work load will be for each individual. I don't think it has anything to do with the other kind of light.

the more people you have to help you with a task or chore the easier it is to get done, as many people make many hands to do the job, light work means easier work

It just means that the more people who help to do a task, the less work there will be for everyone involved. More hands less work.

if lots of people help to get a job done, it gets done quicker the tasks are broken down instead of one person having the burden of doing everything and taking much longer.also the companionship/company while doing the tasks makes it less boring!
