Sarcasm might be if used by someone who has similar failures to their comedy target who doesn't knowingly acknowledge this. Otherwise, it is often spot on.

Irony has, particularly since the early 90s, perhaps most noticably become a way of saying politically incorrect things, expecting the predictable response of the 'groan' from the audience. The audience's interpretation of the joke is important- the comedian could be concerned if the audience agreed with what he was saying. (Perhaps Men Behaving Badly started off like that but, in fact, many of its fans loved what the characters were doing and copied their philosophy). On the other hand, they might enjoy the audience's misinterpretation as it would confirm their own supposedly primarily left-wing views about the majority of people.

The type of humour used is no set indication about how original/imaginative/clever the comedian is.

This idea that Americans don't understand irony is very old though and muli-layered programmes like Friends and Seinfeld should (but won't) dimiss that theory.

There was a very funny book called "1066 and all That", which is filled with ironic twists on history. Long out of print.
Victor Borge wrote anther one called "My Favorite Intermissions"
Ironic and hilarious.
There is a difference between irony and bitterness. Have you ever read Ambrose Bierce? His writing is ironic enough but too bitter.
There is also a difference between irony and sarcasm, which is rarely clever and even more rarely understood by those for whom it is intended.

No, irony is a well established and rarely properly used form of black humour. In order to be truly ironic, one must be extremely creative and intelligent.

Irony is creative too, though sometimes we don't like it.
