But then again this is the same country that allowed George Bush to be President.
In the good old US of A, football is a game in which men dressed as astronauts jump on each other during the intervals between tv adverts

Football is a name for two related sports. The most popular of these worldwide (and by far the most popular sport worldwide) is association football (soccer). The English language word football is applied to rugby football and, Northamerican football, Australian football and Gaelic football.
It is widely believed that the word football originated in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball. Another is that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot. These games were usually played by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports often played by aristocrats. While there is no conclusive evidence for this explanation, the word football has always implied a variety of games played on foot, not just those that involved kicking a ball. In some cases, the word football has been applied to games which have specifically outlawed kicking the ball.

How can the rest of the world get so exited over a sport that involves people running up and down a Field for an hour and a half scoring maby once or twice? Lets not forget the occasional riots thrown by fans of the losing team. Any game that last that long but whose highlights can be shown in under four seconds is a bit too boring for me. I'll take "American rugby" any time.

I would guess that it has to do with its origins, which came from rugby and soccer.
Football historians, those who have studied the game and its origins, place the game’s beginnings in rugby, an English game played with many similarities to football. Rugby began in eighteen twenty-three at the famous Rugby Boys’ School in England. Another cousin of the game of football is soccer; its beginnings can also be traced to English origin, being played as early as the eighteen twenties.
At the same time, a group of students at Princeton began playing what was then known as ‘ballown’. First using their fists to advance the ball, and then their feet, this game consisted mainly of one goal: to advance the ball past the opposing team.

It appears that you don't really want an answer to your question. But-- There are key points in the game where the ball is to be KICKED - hence the name: football. A basketball or a baseball is never to be kicked. A football is expected to be kicked at certain points in the game. Yes it is often thrown by hand, or carried by a runner - but there are points where it is required to be kicked.
