IMHO I would trash the Real Player!!!
It has never done anything but give me headaches. It came preinstalled on my wife's new Dell and the first thing I did was uninstall it and then search for all files and Registry entries using the term Real and deleted every one of them. You can't believe how much crap it installs and what it's running in the background.
Depending on what you have for a PC, my personal preference is Microsoft Media Player 11. It is a bit of a CPU hog so if you have a processor that only runs at 1.5G or less, it will be a bit of a problem to (e.g.) play music and surf the internet at the same time.
If your processor is better than 1.5G you shouldn't have any issues.
Try this. Uninstall Real Player and try MS Media Player that is installed on your PC. Version 10 should be fine for DVD's etc. If you like v10, then I think you will like v11. If you have a valid copy of Windows XP you can download v11 at www.microsoft.com
You can always go back and download Real Player if you really want it back.
Hope this helps a little.

The usual reason Real Player asks for an update is because there is no DVD codec on your machine as nearly all players will play DVDs if there is a codec installed. Here is the but, the only way to get a genuine DVD codec is to pay for it although you could look around the net and see if anyone has a spare copy of something like "Power DVD". Real Player is really not the best either for watching films as it power hungry and they do keep trying to sell you stuff.
You could try this http://www.cliprex.com/ but beware free stuff usually comes with adware/spyware.

A: you have a program called Real installed on your PC which is NOT a stand alone player per-se but a means to an end for Real to distribute advertising.
you would be better off to download Microsoft media player (version 10) and use a plug in from either Nero or powerdvd to enable media player to play your DVDs.
other option: if you have Nero(the burning program) installed you are entitled to one free upgrade from Nero(online) and they have Nero player which i have found to be very good for playing DVDs/
hope this helps.
