It depends on your application. If you are just riding around either will do you just fine. If you are looking to do tricks and such BMX is the way to go. BMX bikes are smaller so they can be pushed around easier. The entire bike is built different. The bars are u shaped with a center bar. The forks are shorter. The frames are smaller with different geometry. There are no shocks either. Mountain bikes are much larger so they are harder to push around and manual. The geometry is very different because the bars are flater and also not as wide. They tend to have shocks most of the time. Those are your main differences so it is all up to your preference and what type of riding you are trying to do.

In general, a mountain bike has evolved into a mulitspeed high performance durable bike. With front and rear (choice) suspension to cushion/stabilize the ride.
A BMX bike is single speed. The frame is build differently. For repeated hard pounding jumps. Normally without front suspension they were the bikes that younger kids and teens had to go riding with. Both bikes have upgrade parts, frames etc. to make them perform give it styling.
What type of riding in general will you be doing? A mulitspeed MTB will make it easier riding on the road or trails than a BMX. A BMX can be more nimble in doing stunts etc..
Have fun riding!

There are a lot of differences. Geometry is one. Another one is that a BMX is more burlier, wheels are different, mountain bikes have lots of gears (well, some are single speeders ;) ), brakes.

It depends on what you want to use it for. If you're using your bike more for parks on pavement and jumping there, go for a BMX, if you want to do more trails or general use, keep the mountain bike.

It really depends on what type of riding you will be doing.

If you like to go to the local sk8 park and do concrete jumps, the bmx will rock your ***** sox. price $150-500

If you like riding down technical tricky rocky trails with gaps and 5ft. drops, a high quality all mountain or freeride mountain bike will fit you best. Also, there is a class of mountain bike called the dirt jumper, specially made for riders that like to jump on DIRT mounds. price $1000++

If you are just usin your bike to go around to work, school, and get some groceries, just get any cheap walmart bike, the'll work. $75

Obviously, bmx/freestyle/stunt bikes have no gears. They have small frames and usually 24" wheels. Some will have foot pegs on the front and rear axles for tricks and stunts. The frames and wheels are built very heavy and strong to take the abuse.

I used to ride a BMX but they suck when you have to go uphill to get to school. Now I ride a mountain bike so I change gears when cycling uphill (plus they're lighter too so it's easier to carry them up the stairs and stuff like that).
