Not unless you're a lesbian. The reason I say that is because men & women are wired differently. I have met plenty of women who say they have online boyfriends, & actually feel a commitment to this person whom they've never met. Men, however, are physically sexual beings by nature. We aren't as fulfilled by the emotional aspects of a relationship as women are, & need that physical contact even more than you do. While women feel close by communicating & sharing their feelings, we men feel closer to you through physical affection.
Personally, I do believe the online relationship is an illusion. It's a safety net relationship, like the ones women sometimes have with men who are sentenced to life in prison. With a convict, you know the guy isn't going to cheat on you, & can't run off & leave you for another woman. Well, with the internet relationship, you enter the same suspension of disbelief you would watching a movie or professional wrestling. You allow yourself to believe the guy is faithful to you, & that you have something truly special, when deep down inside, you know you're probably just deluding yourself.
Truth be told, I think the only real relationship is a REAL relationship. You have to have all the elements. The physical, mental, & emotional connections must be there, & you have to be able to gamble with your feelings to grow as a person. Sure, you'll get hurt by some, but you learn from it & realize they never were right for you. By the time the right person comes along, you have the real dating experience necessary to deal with the little problems life throws you. I hope this has proved helpful.

I have a current friendship with someone online. It's not an everyday relationship. It's more like a when he pops in my mind and time is right I IM him and we catch up.. It can be like a phone relationship or a long distance relationship. All relationships have difficulties I think if you had those problems with those people it would probably have happened offline.

I know it's possible, because I made a good friend online, right here through Answers. I talk to her everyday. Now, if you're talking about something more serious, than it will only work if one of you plans to relocate to be with the other.

It is possible.. but like normal.. take precautions when meeting this person... and think of the things that may have to change should you meet someone and really like them enough to go farther with it. Good Luck!

it's an illusion because you will only know what they want you to know, everyting you hear will be what they want you to hear. So the impression you build up of that person will not necessirly be real. There's no way it could be FUNCTIONAL either, because it's only functioning one way: conversation.

It is an illusion based on ideas that you conceive, not those that actually exist!
