I don't think there are specific rules on how to prepare yourself. I say it would be best for you to read a lot... check out dictionaries and thessauruses... and take note of each new word that you encounter, remember it, and write it down.

study a lot. go after words that are hard. i had such a horrible experience in school. We had a big spelling bee and since everyone thinks i am the smartest kid in school, when i lost a word everyone gasped and began muttering... i hate when people do that.
