I am trying to quit smoking but I find that sometimes when I am on the phone, for instance, my fingers and hand must have a cigarrette. Also, I find that I crave that distinct smoke taste often, how do I subsitute those two. Any ideas.

Make sure that you always have eucalyptus lollies. They are proven to help the with the withdrawal of cigarettes. Every time you crave for one, replace it with a lolly. Or drink a glass of water, the hardest is the first few weeks but once you reach about 3-4 weeks- regardless of how bad the cravings are, you wont have the courage to light up because thats how hard it is to get through. So aim for that 3 or 4 weeks. You'll get there.

I'd say fiddle with a pencil in your hands. The Greeks have their worry beads that they hold and the Irish have a worry stone that they rub their fingers with. I've seen these rubbing stones in New Age shops. They are smooth and often beautiful, sometimes made of agate or marble. There's also Nicotine Anonymous. Maybe its called Smoker's Anonymous in some places. I don't smoke myself, so I'm giving advice second hand. Why go it alone? Call the American Cancer Society & see if there's a group of folks trying to quit in your area. I'm a big believer in support groups. Good luck,

Find a good hobby that utilizes both hands. But first you need to stay clear of smoke that will trigger an urge all the time, clean your sanctuary of ashtrays, anything related to smoking, wash cloths, coats, bedding, curtains. rent a rug cleaning machine to clean rugs and furniture. if your smoking was terrible, then paint the walls that should keep your hands busy for awhile. Not sure what your hobby is. May I suggest one that I find real cool? OK!
I purchase 50 lb bags of gravel from a Sapphire mine out in Montana. what is so cool about it is that you can find loads of Sapphires, rubies, large garnets, perhaps a diamond or two(I found a beautiful 4ct Diamond. My largest Sapphire is almost ten Ct's. Take your time looking, you do not want to pass anything up.
type in sapphirebarmine.com that should get ya there if you are interested. Anyway I get excited and dig in and do not want to waste time lighting up. make a commitment to yourself to not smoke. best wishes. BC

go for gum and nicotine gum
when you have to taste smoke go out for a walk
(you might stop to talk to smokers on your way)
inhale, you might get some second hand smoke!

if you are badly hooked go for cigarillos (small cigarette sized cigars)
have one at the end of the day to signify a job well done

substitute your oral fixation with something else, like brush one more time a day and plastic tooth picks

make it a point to floss once a day at work
and admire the clean-ness of your new mouth

oh and make a small goal chart,
i mean if you see your not making it and really want a smoke
get yourself a chart and promise yourself to smoke on friday night
that way you'll have something to look forward to
and you'll enjoy that one cigarette a week better than you have enjoyed all the others you smoked out of stress or habit

make a plan to stop for a week or a month at a time
so you dont have to be hard on yourself if you slip
my alternative therapist says a smoke once a month is good for you if you enjoy it and dont need it

you have a lot of hard work ahead
i have to get more plastic sticks to chew down
good luck!

Just yesterday while in a health food store my son who's always looking for new and interesting things, found these toothpicks that are saturated in a very potent cinnamon flavored tea oil. These toothpick have so much flavor that they last forever. I would recommend trying them because unlike a piece of gum they hold their flavor and you can just chew on them and put one back and forth in your mouth as for something to do with your fingers. I believe that the potent cinnamon flavor will soon help you to forget about the smoke taste that you crave. These toothpicks help to keep your breath fresh too.
