Classifides, Craigslist, anywhere people would privately sell cars.

You're better off with the japanese cars like Hondas and Toyotas, they're reliable and they don't lose value as quickly as american cars should you decide to sell that in the future and upgrade.

I would look through classified ads - your local paper, Craigslist, etc. - and at dealerships that sell cheap beat up cars. I normally find the best bargains are American cars as the way they don't hold their resale value means they are often less worn out by the time they hit that price, but there are bargain cars in that price range from Japan and even Europe.

In most cases, you are best off going by the condition of the car rather than the make and model. By the time a car crosses the $2,000 line, it is likely to have a lot of things worn out. Make sure none of the things that are broken are going to be expensive to fix. If you are not a decent mechanic yourself, have a trusted mechanic look it over.

many times the best cheap car you will ever own is bought from an estate, when an elderly person dies and leaves behind a 10 year old cup cake, well maintained and driven kindly. if you can find one of those you are lucky.
