Everyone seems to be picturing the stereotypical Japanese person. Just like in all countries, there are people in Japan who goof off at work, in school, etc. While they do work hard and put in long hours as a society, the Japanese people are both fun-loving and laidback...especially outside of work. I wouldn't say that they are any more or less serious than most people. Perhaps you should take the time to visit Japan or make Japanese friends...you'll see!

I have Asian friends, and they are just like everyone else,no different.they laugh and cry, they love and hate.In other words they are human like all of us are.One of my neighbors is from Japan and is an executive with a drug firm he could have been a stand up comedy star .his impersonations are fantastic and so funny,he does a great Clinton and Bush. he loves his wife and his children and hes a great guy.In fact he introduced me to Asian films and Ive become a devoted fan of the late Shintaro Katsu from the Zatoichi movies and TV series of long ago. Thus my name and profile. So to answer your question yes they are serious but very human...

in basic terms once you're comfortable, you could smile and make some jokes ('poke exciting' would desire to be different.), precise? they are frequently reserved till they open their recommendations. they only take extra time. fairly at artwork they are extreme and hardly tell jokes, yet completely substitute after 5pm and alter into 'human'. There seems to be a distinction between Tokyo and Osaka.

As regards supporting life on an archipelago frequently subjected to natural calamities ,may be yes! Such conditions probably might have programmed them as workholics but not life in general as such. A certain sense of insularity and strains of cultural pride can be due to the fact that in a history of millinia they were never dominated or subjugated by any foreign power. With the advent of western gun boat diplomacy during years of colonialization they quickly saw and realized the threat and adapted themselves with serious western studies and methods of industrial management.During a naval war in 1902 they routed Russian navy and proved their mettle as people of Orient. As a broad demarcation in God's creation on Earth, however, the Japanese as orientals are more inclined to spirituality making use of human existence as a means of self realiztion redeeming the soul from the entanglements of ephemeral materialistic physical world. The philosophy ingrained naturally in the West under the strong influence of Greek thought makes use of spirituality as means of self actulization in an ephemeral material world exploring the subtle intents of God's creation in a systematic manner making use of mind-intellect and intelligence as His gifts to humanity to comprehend and enjoy His Glory. The Japanese adaptation to westernization as against their own natural philosophy did pay dividends as an oriental nation of highest standards of living. But the implication of maintaing such acquired standards at a cost of enjoyment corrupted the minds of even such serious people who began ruthlessly exploiting neighbour nations for raw materials and markets. An invincing pride inculcated in their minds as masters of pacific islands and witnessed by the blitzkrieg on Pearl Harbour during WW2 had to be expunged with the greatest brutalty and ruthlessnes in a holocaust generated by two thermo-nuclear explosions from two atomic bombs dropped on their heads. This made the Japanese capitulate physically and surrender their auothority to victors but not the infallible programmes of spirituality of their souls. I remember on articles imported from Japan stamped as "Made in occupied Japan". Soon, probably, they realized the folly of a fascination which began more than a century ago and made them fall back upon their own innate programming of seriousness of life's purpose resurrecting themselves up with renewed vigour and once again incorporating as a civilized nation capturing world markets commercially in general and establishing as Japan Inc. in the befriended U.S.A in particular.
