Those aren't the only two options. There always need to be three... believe in a god or set of gods, believe in no gods, or have no beliefs regarding gods.
Belief isn't a choice... you can't just wake up one day and decide to believe something. For me, it comes down to evidence and proof. There isn't any, either way. I cannot show a shred of evidence that points to a god, nor can I point to anything that indicates there cannot be one or more. No conclusions can be drawn.
Other people may, of course, think religion is important. That's fine, it's their call. Given the lack of evidence, I see it as an arbitrary choice, and given the amount of human pain and suffering religion has caused, a potentially harmful one.

God is the deity believed by monotheists to be the supreme reality. He is believed variously to be the creator, or at least the sustainer, of the universe.
Theologians and philosophers have ascribed a number of attributes to God, including omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, omnibenevolence, divine simplicity, and eternal and necessary existence. He has been described as incorporeal, a personal being, the source of all moral obligation, and the greatest conceivable existent. These attributes were all supported to varying degrees by the early Jewish, Christian and Muslim scholars, including St Augustine, [2] Al-Ghazali, [3] and Maimonides. [2] Freud regarded this view of God as wish fulfillment for the perfect father figure, [3] while Marxist writers see it as rooted in the powerlessness experienced by men and women in oppressive societies.
All the great medieval philosophers developed arguments for the existence of God, [3] attempting to wrestle with the contradictions God's attributes seem to imply. For example, God's omniscience implies that he knows how free agents will choose to act. If he does know this, their apparent free will is illusory; and if he does not know it, he is not omniscient. [4] Similar difficulties follow from the proposition that God is the source of all moral obligation. If nothing would be right or wrong without God's commands, then his commands appear arbitrary. If his commands are based on fundamental principles that even he cannot change, then he is not omnipotent. [5]
The last few hundred years of philosophy have seen sustained attacks on the ontological, cosmological, and teleological arguments for God's existence. Against these, theists (or fideists) argue that faith is not a product of reason, but requires risk. There would be no risk, they say, if the arguments for God's existence were as solid as the laws of logic, a position famously summed up by Pascal as: "The heart has reasons which reason knows not of."

You know, its hard to tell if God really exist. But no matter what, God is like a hope for everyone. You think of him when you're down, or when you're happy... he's like the invisible strength within yourself... I believe in God, even though sometimes I doubt if he's even there (especially if when I'm mad with my life), but no matter if I hate him, like him or don't believe in him.. I realised that no matter how I thought of him, if I ever thought of him, I must be believing that he's there... I believe in all religion.. but of course there is a line to everything.
Anyway, even if God really is actually just a made up story to get everyone have someone to look up to... I will still accept it, cause it's really what keeps us sane. No matter if one believe in God or not, it does play a part in their lives. So, God kinda rules. LOL

I believe in the symbol of religion. In most modern styles of religion a worship pattern prevails and the idea of a supreme entity is provided as a grand observer. I think if we are to take it one step farther we will notice that symbolism allows us to view prospects of good and evil. It must have evolved from our need to justify our existence. I also think it is possible to live a stable existence without religion by living with good intention. We can look for the good in life without pinning gods name on everything. Your topic of interest is a topic about personal freedom, a very important topic to think about....

Which god? I'll assume the Christian one.
I examined the said evidences and realized that none of it was based in fact. It was all about faith. And if faith is all it takes to make something true then that means that all religions are true and that is impossible because they aren't compatible.
Bottom line. I learned to not believe things without evidence.
I am an atheist. One who disbelieves that there is a god. Not one who says they can prove that god(s) don't exist. I can equally not prove to you that invisible blue squirrels don't exist either.

I believe in God because I know there has to be more to life than what goes on here on earth. I know He has been there for me many times through my life. I also believe in God for all the wonderful creations He made and for the forgiveness of my sins and the sins of others. God is Great.

i believe in God because it gives me something to believe in, and i'd rather go in life knowing that there is a God rather than go through life thinking that there is no God. it gives me a sense of spirituality and with my belief comes faith, something that i may not have had i not had the belief in God. it also helps me through prayer, knowing that someone out there is listening to my prayers, someone who i believe is everything to me. also, seeing my grandmother pray every day of her life the way she did to God increased my faith in him as it gave me a greater perspective on life and my beliefs. to me it doesnt matter if theres no real proof if God exists, there couldnt possibly be any proof considering we're alive and not dead, but just by having the belief that he does exists makes it all that much better to live my life.
