Last nite, I was driving home with my husband in the car, when I hit a dog. We stopped to see what I hit, and the dog was still moving. Unfortunately, the dog was ran over two more times, before we could drive backward, put our flashers on and get out and caution people till the police came. Finally, my husband just pulled the dog off the road. There was so much commotion and three cars stopped to help, I was sobbing so darn loud, they were concerned for me. I could not help it. I love animals, I have two dogs of my own, and here I killed one. I don't know if I can ever forgive myself. I didn't even have time to swerve. The owner came down after seeing all the lights flashing and cars on the side of the road, and he said it was his dog. I took a hold of him and just held on and sobbed. I felt so terrible. He told me he should have been in his kennel, it was not my fault. The thoughts just keep going over in my head at what I did. Please no bad answers, I couldn't take it.

I know just how you feel!! Last Christmas I was taking the back road home which is located between my mothers house and my family. It was late, about 11pm, It was me and my two young children, and out of nowhere over a hill(with woods on the side), came two dogs. I slammed on my breaks and avoided one dog, but because of the snow my car slid and I plowed right into the second. I got out and looked and he had snapped his neck and was dead there was nothing that I could do. I went up the road about 20ft. just over the hill for the nearest house and found a family there. I told them I just hit a dog and needed to call the police to have it removed, I couldn't bear to touch it, and didn't wat my kids to see it. They walked with me to help me and found out it was there's. They had three children waiting at home, on Christmas day that was about to find out that one of their dogs have been killed. I felt so bad that that is all I could think about all day. I have two dogs too, and just thinking of loosing one of them on the holiday made me so sad. Everyone told me I should not feel bad, they should have been tied up, but I did. A owners ignorance does not make you feel better about killing an animal. I know that it is still soon for you, but you will do better as the days go by. Not forget, just do better. And will always be reminded when you go by that area. Good luck in your grief.

I feel for you as I am a lover of animals as well. You can only know that you would never knowing hurt the dog, it was just an accident. I myself have been known to drive 10km with a bird that someone has hit just to take it to the vets and if you could have done something for the dog I am sure you would have. Having a kind heart must win some brownie points in life so try to put the sight out of your mind as it really won't help to dwell on it.

And people like George obviously have no heart and should be ignored by all!

Dear Rach, stop blaming yourself, after all this was an accident and you are very courageous for stopping to try to help the dog most people would not have stopped. Think of it this way, "Things Happen for a Reason", the dogs faith was already decided before he darted in front of you. Find Peace, God Bless

No, but my dog was run over and killed in a freak accident and i was there to witness it. It is a horrific thing to see, and i can't imagine, as a dog lover, what it would be like to do.
I wouldnt worry though, you clearly feel bad about it. Accidents happen, and some are worse than others.

You're a decent human being. Most people would say it's just a dumb animal and you're over reacting. I say your a wonderful person, but it's really not your fault. I've done it before and felt terrible for days. But it soon passed, as it will with you. I feel just as bad when bad things happen to animals as when they happen to people. Animals are innocent and shouldn't be subjected to cruelty just because we are superior.
