Why bother, it is an enormous (6-8Gbs) of programme that looks prettier, has a few more tweaks and (to a certain extent works with dual core). The security is a better, but for how long and will come in 3 versions the cheapest being "Home Basic" which virtually adds nothing to XP. Also note you need more RAM, a more than decent graphics card etc, and XP Service Pack 3 will be coming out 6 months after Vista (apparently it's ready now). This really is not the mega change that XP was too 98 so I would wait until Vista SP2 comes out at least.

windows vista i available now as a beta version from Microsoft, but the official release dates as quoted by Microsoft are at the moment stated as

commercial option is due for release in November 2006

general user edition due for release in January 2007

these dates are direct from Microsoft and are only suggested dates and may be due to change, the current beta version is consistently going through upgrades and until Microsoft are sure the product is stable enough Microsoft will not be releasing it to the open market as a full product

for direct and up to date information visit the vista section of Microsoft's own website at

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.aspx

hope this clears things up for you
