Contact your nearest mosque. Just look in the yellow pages under churches and other places of worship. Also most decent libraries will have at least one copy of an authorized translation for the Holy Koran, as the translation will most likely be called. Islam is one the fastest growing religions in America.

Another suggestion would be to update your question to show your location so someone can recommend a place close to you where you visit and learn for free. Some of the websites I see posted here are familiar to me too as having very good information and yes I have read the English translation. If you are a student of religions you might notice a lot of similiarities in the first book to the story of Genesis right up through the life of Christ. In fact they have a whole lineage of Mary that is very detailed. The names are different but it is pretty easy to figure out.

I wish you well on your journey.

Peace

Every Muslim can tell you the basic beliefs and rituals in Islam. However, If you really want to learn something about Islam then meet some learned Islamic scholar. If it is not possible and you want to visit websites then I would recommend the following sites:

http://www.understanding-islam.com
http://www.al-mawrid.org

You can send your queries to them, Before than go through the site and you'll find the answer to most of your questions.

- Al-Mawrid is an Islamic research institute in Lahore, Pakistan.
- People managing these sites always back their opinion with reason rather than just blindly follow past jurists

There is a British non-fiction writer named Karen Armstrong who for decades has specialised in religions. Apart from books about Boudhism etc, she has written one about Islam and one about Mohammed, both written with much empathy, but unbiased and they make a nice read.

Coming more from the corner of Islam itself is 'No God but God' from Reza Aslan, a Persian American assistant professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Iowa.

You must first read the book 'No God but God' : The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam: by Reza Aslan.
www.amazon.com/No-god-but-God-Evolution/dp/0812971892 -

If you are a woman, please read 'Inside the Kingdom' by Carmen Bin Ladin.
These authors tell the naked truth of Islam. Good luck!

Dont know,
Indonesia.

EDIT: I understand that the Muslims in the Gaza Strip practice a conversion ceremony where you get on you knees and they point a gun at your head, it has something to do with your obedience training. And then they ask you if you want to be a Muslim. It's actually quite touching. It gets more touching if you say no.
