I read one answer that said God did not teach. The Deity does teach but through others. But to your question. The western world was inundated by :hippie" culture. A lot of good came out of it. The environmental and peace movement for instance but one thing that also came out of the sixties was a warped view on eastern philosophy that some how came to believe that that there was only rights and no responsibilities. Bye the bye no one else as rights if they interfere with what you want. That what you wanted and if you wanted it innocently there was no harm, no sin and no consequences. The important point is no sin, sin was declared fascist as was any attempt to impose order and regulation. Contrary to life. The only ones who believe this are those who never lived outside of the world that order and regulation created. That world will cater to many delusions and insanities. The physical and spiritual world have rules and if you don't learn them and obey them there are consequences. Neither treats those who don't well.

Of course there are consequences for sin. We see them all around us and experience them daily.
Salvation comes only to those who utilize the Atonement in their lives, such as repenting and forgiving and getting necessary ordinances done.

consequences follow everything we choose to do. Whatever choice we make there is a consequence to follow. This is a law, a fact, a standard, something that cannot be ignored or explained away. Just like gravity.
If you have premarital sex the consequences are 1. you lose your virginity 2. you lose your purity and light 3. you are no longer innocent 4. you can potentially empregnate someone or become pregnant yourself to a 1 parent situation (ALWAYS a bad thing) 5. you can potentially contract STD's, which includes HIV/AIDS 6. You lose your sense of self worth 7. you no longer see sex as something sacred and special
Anyway, I could go on. Those are just a few of the consequences to having premarital relations, and there are consequences to everything we do, but,
if we repent, we can be forgiven and become happy again and experience what true joy and happiness are. Sure, most of the consequences will follow us for our entire lives, perhaps throughout the eternities, but they can be "lessened" or be made to feel not as burdensome, and even some of them can be removed altogether, but the most important part of the Atonement is that we can be forgiven, have peace, and live with God again one day, which is, exactly, SALVATION.

Good question. How can Christians be saved by just believing and then have to worry about the consequences of sinning? Wouldn't they just go wild and start sinning all over the place once they've convinced themselves that the supernatural gospels are true? Are the saved running amok now hurting others, stealing, fornicating, etc, as you read this ?

Very complex answer is needed to truly answer your question, but I will answer based on my belief system.

I believe that the consequences for sin are in this life. The salvation that MY God has given me is not saving me from his/her punishment, but rather saving me from an unhappy or unfulfilled life.

God doesn't teach about salvation. God's strawmen claim about the need to save your soul from an alleged hell. There's a world of a difference.
