No offense taken, Forgiven.
I was Navy and the most combat training we received was firing three clips from a 1911 re-chambered to fire .22 caliber rounds. and if you hit the target sheet anywhere with at least half your rounds, you qualified. and this was on a short indoor range. It comprised the sum total of ONE morning of our 8 week boot. and most of that was the safety lecture.
Marine Boot focuses almost EXCLUSIVELY on combat training. Military command and rank structure (Even if called by different names) are pretty much universal. A Former Marine going into say the Navy. Already knows how to be Military. He just needs to learn whatever new Navy specialty he needs.
A Sailor transferring to the Marines however has NO combat skills whatsoever compared to a Marine. so he must go thru the training.
now for some inter-service ribbing...
I am sure there would be an exception made on boot camp if say a NAVY Seal decided to go to the Marines (Even if said squid would deign to join a lesser service )
JUST KIDDING!

Sir,
Great question. In my previous assignment (I am currently deployed in Iraq) I commanded an Army Reception Company at Fort Knox. You are correct, Marines do not have to go through the Army Basic training program if they went through the marine corps program. Why?
The answer is simple. Every Marine is a rifleman first, and then learns his specialty after his basic training. Marines boot camp focuses primarily on combat skills, whereas the other services focus more on drill and ceremony. The Army is however, changing, and becoming more like the marines. The time may not be too far off when Army training is equal, if not superior to the Marine boot camp. When that happens, you will likely see a change in training requirements.
Sorry Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard fans - your basic training is WEAK, and unless fundamental changes are made, you'll always have to attend Army / Marine boot camps. It makes sense though, you have different missions. Ours is to close with and engage and then destroy the enemy on the ground. Really - how many Soldiers does the Navy or Airforce need; i'd say not too many, they focus on different issues, and that is to be expected.

I am Active duty Air Force but my Cousin cross-serviced to the Marines. The Marine basic is a lot more indepth than the others and is Marine Corps centric so you have to complete Marine Basic, or Boot Camp. Also I have been told you are not a MARINE, until you go though Boot camp. I have a lot of respect for the Marines, especially working with them here in Iraq. They are some Squared away Joes.

Because marine corps basic is by far the toughest boot there is. So the other services have to take there boot just to catch up physically and mentally. There physical training is kindly called challenging there mentality portion is there intense esprit de corps that takes a will to build and is not nearly as intense in the other services.

Their Basic Training ("Boot Camp" as they call it) is 3 weeks longer and more difficult. As a sub-unit of the Navy, the Marines are considered to be the largest Special Operations unit in the Military. Wouldn't you expect to go through any other Special Ops school in order to be a member of that Special Ops unit?
I am in the Army by the way, but I do agree that the Marine Boot Camp is tougher and should be mandatory.
