my orthodontist thought it was nerves that were dead, but he xrayed it and found nothing wrong. u can see it in pictures and people see it and its just not cool.

when your orthodontist took xrays, did he also test the tooth using something cold? or a electronic machine dentist call a electric pulp tester? If he didn't then, you really don't know whether the tooth is dead or not. the cold test can be done at home with someone in your family. have someone put an ice cube on one tooth at a time, when you feel the cold, move the ice away and on to another tooth. you should do this to 2 teeth next to the one that's discolored so that you know how long it takes the "normal" looking teeth to react to the cold. if the discolored tooth is dead, it would take a lot longer for you to feel the cold compared to the other teeth, or you may not feel it at all. but to know for sure, you should go to a dentist. after all, dead tooth or not, he's the person to make the discoloration go away.

ymatts is right. Diagnosing dead teeth takes more than an x-ray. Let your orthodontist move your teeth, but let your general dentist check out the dark tooth for you.

Try some teeth cleaner / whitening stuff on JUST that tooth and see if it helps
