Look at it's eyes, it's the best way to ID a brown recluse.
While most other spiders have 8, the Brown Recluse has only 6 eyes arranged in 3 pairs shaped like a U. (A pair of eyes up front and 2 more pairs... one on each side).
Only a handful of other spiders that live in the US have only 6 eyes too. You can look for the dark brown violin on it's back as well. In addition, the brown recluse's legs are a uniform brown with only fine hairs on them (no spiny hairs).
Here is a website with good pictures of what is and is not a brown recluse:

Here is a map link to the brown recluse's normal territorial range:

No matter all of the horror stories you hear, confirmed brown recluse bites are extremely, extremely rare. Here is an excerpt from Rick Vetter, an entomologist and arachnidologist...
"even if you have a recluse, bites from them are extremely rare, despite all the stories. Many of the really graphic nasty wounds you see on the internet as recluse bites can also be other conditions like necrotizing bacteria and pyoderma gangrenosum. Ninety percent of brown recluse bites are not medically significant, heal very nicely often without medical. intervention and treatment for most brown recluse bites is simple first aid (RICE therapy – Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Many conditions are misdiagnosed as recluse bites when their cause is something else like infection, bad reaction to medication, diabetic ulcers, Lyme disease, or other underlying medical conditions."
And finally, here is an amusing rant from the famed arachnidologist, Rick Vetter on the topic of the fabled Loxosceles Reclusa Californiae (Californian Brown Recluse):
http://spiders.ucr.edu/myth.html
NOTE: There ARE no brown recluse spiders in California except for the extremely rare hitchhiking spider that gets a free ride to CA on a truck, etc.

Brown recluses are everywhere. Many people commonly mistake them for the common brown house spider. I am a paramedic and one of the specialties that I teach is toxins. We have a lot of them around North Carolina. They typically like to live in dark, dry, warm places. Many people are often bitten on the toes or fingers. Gloves that you put up from season to season. They get in the fingers. Shoes that you haven't worn in a while. They are pretty non-aggressive. They don't like to be bothered, that's why they hide out. Many people who are bitten by the brown recluse do not even know that they have been bitten. They may not even feel a pinch. Days later, the area will become very white in the center and usually very red around it. It may or may not itch. You should immediately go to the doctor. There is not like an antivenom or anything, but they will clean it, give you a tetanus shot and IV antibiotics. The bite will not usually cause sickness like the black widow. The black widow will cause nausea, vomiting, paralysis, etc. The recluse will literally cause the skin to rot. Many times, the skin should be scraped. It is a pretty nasty little bite. Usually the really old and really young should be greatly concerned,

Brown Recluse Spiders have a fiddle shaped marking on their cephalothorax (the front part) This is why they are also know as "Fiddlebacks". The dead ones are much less active than the live ones (joke).

MOST OF THE ABOVE ANSWERS ARE TRUE. HOWEVER, I WAS BITTEN EARLIER THIS YEAR AS WAS MY MOTHER-IN-LAW, A FAMILY FRIEND (2 BITE EPISODES AND CURRENTLY RECOVERING FROM A TOTAL OF FIVE RECLUSE BITES TO HIS KNEE!), AND NOW MY SON IS RECOVERING FROM A BITE. I HAVE ALSO KNOWN OF ONE PERSON TO BE BITTEN BY RECLUSES ON SEVEN SEPARATE OCCASIONS. I DONT KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON THIS YEAR, BUT THEY SEEM TO BE MORE AGITATED FOR SOME REASON.
