dentist is out of town-it doesn't hurt but feels weird, as if there is something stuck between my teeth, but it isn't food, it is actually a part of my gum tissue dangling. Could someone explain what is going on, how this happened and what I can do about it?

You probably had a deep pocket and the hygienist removed the bacteria and tartar. The tissue usually shrinks back but sometimes there is excess that just doesn't behave. I wouldn't recommend you cutting it off yourself! Not a big deal, just call the office and get an appointment when your dentist comes back. The tissue might already be gone by then (if it has no blood supply it), if not he will probably just snip it off (with sterile instruments of course!).
To prevent this from happening again be sure to floss well everyday (be sure to curve against each side of the tooth and scrub up and down several times) and brush at least 2-3 times a day. Also make sure you see your hygienist at his or her recommended interval (every 3-6 months).

Sometimes it can be removed with laser, not usually painful but they could give anesthetic if needed. Do not cut off yourself.
