An investigation on the question, was taken up by Saul Shiffman of the University of Pittsburgh. It was revealed:
Cigarette smokers have reported on many questionnaires that sadness, nervousness, and other unpleasant feelings prompt their tobacco intake. Many researchers have inhaled those accounts and argued that people continue to smoke cigarettes to quell nasty moods triggered by the first pangs of nicotine withdrawal. People were most likely to reach for a smoke when they reported a low-to-moderate rise in their subjective urge to smoke. The findings are consistent with past suggestions that cigarette smokers anticipate their nicotine urges and light up quickly enough to stay within a personal comfort zone.
I am tempted to state a very interesting psycho-analysis I read about 10 years ago (I found it very interesting). It said -
Cigarette is smoked mostly when people are tensed or pass through an emotional time. It is a certain feeling of insecurity involved with giving a puff. A child, insecured one, feels so secured when it hides its face in the bosom of its mother. So does an adult man (here the mother is replaced by his wife/girl-friend etc). So, psychologically, the breast of a woman is a perfect place to hide one's face (and thats what humans tend to do - try and hide face by some gesture or the other) when there is a feeling of insecurity. The butt is a cigarette is round and so is the nipple adorning the breast. So, men tend to equate the butt of a cigarette with a nipple and thus get some respite. Thus the best way to quit smoking - have a nipple handy !!!! make best use of it when you feel like having a puff !!!!! HAHAHAHA.

Why do some people drink alcohol when they know it is dangerous? Why do some people avoid wearing their seat belt when they know it is dangerous? Why do some people not wear helmets when riding their bicycle, when they hear that it is dangerous? I do need to change your sentence a bit, and maybe some of mine. Smoking CAN possibly be dangerous to your health, just like all those other things I mentioned. However, I forgot to add about skydiving, rock climbing, pot smoking, obesity, etc etc etc.

If it was legal for people of all ages to do it anywhere anytime, less people would do it. You crave what you can't attain kind of thing. Many people like dangerous things, they find a rush in it. It can be relaxing as well.

Older people I would guess stubbornness and addiction. Younger people I would say rebellion and peer pressure.
