Hi there again...there are over the counter products available at most pet stores to treat ear mites. Acarexx is the best of the available brands (http://www.1800petmeds.com/pdetail.asp?SK=10836&SP=cat). However, some are only minimally effective, whereas the vet can prescribe a treatment that eliminates the mites in a shorter period of time safely. Some home remedies to clean ears is to use mineral oil on a cotton pad and wipe. However, this doesn't alleviate the problems with the mites.

Please see the following web article about ear mites written by a vet:

just to let you know that ear mites can be a serious problem ! even if you do get some over the counter meds you still need to remove the mites after the medication ! which isn't easy ! even if you have an extremely passive cat , which i doubt... an animal shelter can save you some $ over a vet ... but if you do treat the cat yourself ,,, wrap the cat very snugly in a thick towel to remove the mites after treatment it is usually better to have some assistance at this point, and it will probably take more than one treatment to get rid of the mites for good...... don't delay on this treatment whatever way you decide to go as it can cause irreversable damage to your cats hearing and equilbrium ...... good luck !

Can't you just call the vet's office and describe the symptoms and believe it is earmites and pick up the medicine from the office instead of having to take the cat in? The best treatment is drops of medication the vet has. Ear mite ears ar black and looks like black fuzz or waste in the ears and the cat will constantly scratch at them. been there, didn't like it. The old fashioned ear drops worked fine.

Have you tried PDSA, they help pet owners that can't afford 'normal?!!' vets bills!
I live in Spain & the vets here a SO different. I took my dog to have his nails trimmed, when I asked how much to pay, he said nothing, "I did it for the good of the dog!", so I went across the road & bought him a bottle of red wine, he was rather nice too! It cost £40 + to walk into the Vets waiting room where we ued to like in UK!
