I think you're onto something and have phrased it well. It seems to me, though, that it's more about the Christian ideal being misinterpreted and therefore the wrong things being tried.

And that misinterpretation started with Paul, if not earlier. There are some oddities in the Gospels, that are based on literal readings of Hebrew poetic mechanisms in the prophets, like Jesus riding in on a donkey and a mule. Paul and co. believed that the Second Coming would occur during their lifetimes and wrote on that basis. They were obviously wrong about it, but much of Christianity still follows these teachings.

Somewhere in there was a teacher with some interesting things to say. Christianity would look and act very different if it stripped away the rest and went back to the actual Christ.

The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting.
Some people tried all kinds of churches and they really don't know what the want! If you have Jesus and the Holy Ghost close to you, you don't have to look no further!!

Christianity has been tried for 2,000 yrs and has failed miserably just as the other religions have. It never gave us peace. What I see mainstream religions do, is fractionalize. The Iraq war has shown us how Islam has fractionalized too, into Sunni, Shiite, and probably small splinter groups.
Time to try scientific knowledge as a path in life to truth, understanding, and higher quality of life, I think.

I think you are crazy. Are you suggesting more people need to give Christianity a try before they deny it? How can you do that? Christianity isn't something you can test drive and then decide if you like it or not.

no i find its been tried and found wanting.

look at creationism/intelligent design. creationism & id is basically religion trying to use science as a vessel to validate its claims. if its been tried and sucessful then intelligent design or creationism wouldnt be necessary...or exist at all.
