Actually, you have it backwards. If it was known to be an absolute irrefutable fact that no deites exist, we'd ALL be atheists. We'd ALL be without belief in a god or gods.

I disagree. If that statement were true, anything that anyone didn't believe in would have to exist. Santa Clause would exist, Darth Vader would exist, Peter Pan would exist, and every single fairy tale character and god ever spoken of would definitely exist. There are atheists not because any god(s) exists, but because the IDEA of god(s) exists. The quote would be true if it read:

"If there were no idea of God, there would be no atheists."

If there were no God, human civilization would have had less death and would have advanced much faster due to the embracing of new knowledge and technology. Just to satisfy you, the word atheist wouldn't even be in the vocabulary! And neither would "religion!" or "god!" Oh, if the world grew up without its existence...

Reminds me of the words to a song. The guy sings that he sees god riding on the subway headed out of town and asked him "don't you have something better to do?" God answered," If I did my job, what would you have to complain about?"

Interesting Q but I agree with the phrasing issue brought up by LurkDragon. Good luck :)

God was there even before He created the universe. It won't and cannot happen that there was no God. He created everything, you and I, including the stubborn atheists!

But there is no God and there are still atheists?

Correction!

If there WAS a God (actual proof, not just as your imaginary friend), there would be no atheists.

That's so very true. That would mean I wouldn't have to deal with horrid remarks when I tell people I'm agnostic. *gasps* Like it's the worst thing they've ever heard.
