I've just bought a Canon Rebel X on eBay, a film SLR. If I purchase a dSLR in the future, will I be able to use the same lenses, or are they tied to one camera? Is there some sort of lens standard or does it vary?

Canon Eos film/digital bodys will accept all EOS mount lenses
*exception EOS EF-S will only work on APS-C sensor bodies
*EOS body will not accept older FD (manual) mounts

Nikon will accept all nikon mount lenses
*again some minor exception and metering issues on D50/70/80

Olympus will accept old OM mounts with a <$100 adapter

Pentax will accept all old K-mount lenses and with <$20 adapter older M42/screw mount lenses.

Sony/Konica Minolta will accept all Maxxum mount lenses (but no MD/MC mount)

What Clavestone said.
Anything that works on you Rebel film body. will also work on any Canon digital SLR camera.
If you do add a Canon dSLR to your collection, you might also have to add a new wide angle lens. Their entry level and semi-pro models have a sensor that's smaller that a frame of film. With the current models (350D, 400D, 20D and 30D) this produces a 'focal length multiplier' of 1.6. Your 50mm will behave as though it were 80mm; a 200mm lens will behave as though it were 320mm, etc. As you can see, this can transform wide angle lenses into normal focal range lenses. This is where Canon EFS lenses come in - these are made specially for digital bodies.

It is very proprietary. Canon won't fit Nikon, which won't fit Pentax, which wont fit Olympus, etc. But the good news is:: In some cases you can get an adapter ring to change from one to another. My Miranda 35, for example has a 4 bladed "twist" mount" where as my Pentax DSLR has the Pentax 3 bladed mount. But the Miranda has the Pentax screw mount threads.

The real problem is you may loos some auto features even though the lens can be used manually.

although I am not certain i do not think that "film" lenses will work on canon digital cameras except some canon camcorders. Your best bet would be to call/email canon and ask them as they will be qualified to answer your question without prejudicing any warranty on either camera or lens

Also look up KEH Used Cameras, I'm sure they have some Nikon N models. KEH has a return policy.
