You are in luck! It's almost Christmas!! (well I work in retail so it's almot Christmas for me lol) I know that for $5 you can get sooooooo many pieces of food (pizza, fruit, just about everything) there is also cooking sets, and for $20 there is a box of shopping cart ironing board and vaccum too. These items can be found at family dollar and big enuf to give my 23 mo old so they should be safe for your son too!

Search online (EBay even) for HABA toys as they have wonderfully realistic wooden food and accesories.
Melissa & Doug also have really fun and creative toy food items.
If you search for it you can even find hand knit wool food!

You can get fake fruit at Walmart in the craft section. A preschool or kindergarten teacher may be able to give you a catalog with something like that in it.

I got a set that came in a clear backpack from walmart... it had utensils, plates, cups, etc I would also suggest looking at toys r us
