DVD will not be taken over by BluRay anytime soon because no one thinks it's a good investment at the moment.

BluRay has been out in America for a while now, and its NOT doing well at all. Hardly any players have been sold.

Movie developers can't stand the new high def age as well. The flaws of the actors and sets can be seen much better with such high quality. Actors and actresses are getting more and more minor cosmetic surgery to remove acne scars and dark spots, and make up artists are trying to figure out better ways to cover everything as well.

Consumers will also be waiting for the PlayStation3 which will have built in BluRay, however this is also not expected to be sold in large quantities, especially to teenagers and children which is the largest group of gaming console consumers.

There will also be a HD DVD disk drive available for the XBOX360, and both devices combined will cost ledd than a PlayStation 3. Thus gamers would be more inclined towards that than the PS3.

There is also the HD DVD format that was just launched as well. Laptops and players have already been released and it is said to be a cheaper alternative. Toshiba has a HD DVD player out as well as a Qosimo laptop which includes HD TV streaming which can be recorded just like a TiVo. Thus, BluRay is up for serious competition.

BluRay and HD DVD are both very new formats, and the disks come at a very high price. This is the main deterrent of buyers since the price of DVD keeps falling, as well as the recent improvments Hard Disk DVD recorders, which record to a Hard Disk and allows you to edit and choose what programs you want to burn to a DVD after recording.
DVD is still highly popular and does not seem like it will be taken over anytime soon.

BluRay and HD DVD will also not be available in the Asian market anytime soon, due to region codes.

Feel free to email me if you need any more information.

Hope it helps :)

No, not with the competition from Toshiba and HD-DVD. And in the long run, how many people really have high definition screens? And how many actually have high definition content on their HDTVs? The need for a higher definition video is low, because people who aren't really into this technology really don't care, because they are consumers. DVDs are big why? Because they are better than VHS in almost every way: navigation, video, audio, packaging, portability, rewinding. But the next generation DVDs don't bring anything new to the playing field except higher capacity.

But they might become the big thing in another decade...

I'm sure the DVD will be replaced by the Blue Ray. Everything gets replaced with something better, and as fast as technology is leaping forward these days it won't be long before the CD is as forgotten as the cassette tape, with the fast growing use of the mp3.

Nah don't think so, blu ray is only a higher version of a DVD, blu ray will have the ability to be like a quad-layered or higher. plus the compression rate is better, but still a fancy dvd in the end
