Baby, College Park as changed in the past 20 years beyond recognition. My hubby grew up there, we know.
If you are looking at the south side, look into the Fayette/ Coweta area. My cousin is a realtor in Newnan. Here's a website that will hopefully shorten your search somewhat.
Good luck, hun. Welcome back home.

I personally like staying on the north end of town. You have all the access you need to the city, yet are still out of a lot of the hustle and bustle of it all. My top picks would be Cherokee and Bartow counties. (about 20 miles north of the perimeter) Both have low taxes too compared to surrounding counties. I taught in the Cherokee county school system. It is hit or miss with some of schools, but just ask around as you start looking for houses. As far as crime rates...it is picking up regardless of the area you live in. If you want anything remotely close to the city (45 minutes), the crime rate will be higher. Another suggestion if you don't mind a little bit further to drive is Forsyth county. It's about 1 hour from the city, but close to the outlet mall in Dawsonville! Very nice. Here is a website with crime stats per year and county. Good luck!!

16 years? Wow, you'll be lost there. Things have changed so much. We moved from there two years ago, and now going back, I'm shocked at the changes.
My sister lives in Alpharetta. That seems like a nice, quite town. It is close to the city, but far enough away also. It is on the north east side. The cummings area is growing as well.
Good luck, and happy hunting.

College Park still has nice older homes in the area but like most areas around Atlanta there is crime. It seems like where ever you go around Atl there is crime. North ga mountains nad Helen would be a beautiful area to live but not sure what the employment is like.Welcome Bck

Cherokee county is growing like crazy! If you want away from the growth I would go further north and Cherokee County. If you want in the middle of it, Marietta is a good place, from what I have heard.
I dated someone that lived in Cartersville, that place is slower than Christmas...... They have a Target and a Goody's GO THEM! The rest of the place hasn't changed. Yet it is close to 75.

Bartow County - easy access to Atlanta via I-75. It's pretty, small-town feeling and "just far enough away" but not too far! Check out Cartersville.
